 I’ve been a marketing guy for over 20 years and an Internet marketing specialist for 11 years. I perform SEO for a very diverse group of clients. Diversity is a neccesity , because I don’t want them competing for the same top spot on search engines .

Background – What is Search Engine Optimization (SEO)?

The process of optimizing your website to appear on the first page   of search engines like Bing, Yahoo!, ad Google is called Search Engine Optimization (SEO).  This is also called “organic search,” in contrast to “paid search” the sponsored sites you see on the side of the search engines.

Advertisers often pay from ten cents to hundreds of dollars for one click using paid search, while with SEO, organic clicks are free.    Nevertheless , surfers are 8 times as likely to choose an organic link as a paid link.  So, the value of Search Engine Optimization is enormous.

Process

Before beginning any project, it’s good to have a proven process to follow.  Here’s ours …

Goal Setting

Always start with setting goals .  “If you don’t know where you’re going, any road will take you there.”  So, exactly what are we trying to accomplish ?  Is it just to get visitors to our site, through any possible shenanigans ?  You probably want visitors to take some action. Actions could be: “Just read this health warning and share it with others.”  Or, contact us via email or phone. Or subscribe to our newsletter …   Or purchase our products online …

After you know what you want from your visitors , you can begin to quantify it.  For example, the goal might be to have 8 visitors a day sign up for our newsletter.  Or to sell 100 eBooks or DVDs a month. 

I don’t limit what I do to SEO and neither should you.  Getting on Google Page 1 is only half the battle.  If you’re not getting visitors to take some action, then what’s the point?

A recent client contracted me to build a website and perform Search Engine Optimization for her law firm.  Within four weeks we were on page 1 of google for her top three terms !  Moreover, we had two listings for each of the top three terms!  For example, we’d have Position #5 and Position #7 for the same term .

She was ecstatic for about a week.  Then she complained that she wasn’t getting any calls.  So we revised the text on her website.  Now she gets calls and real business.  Six weeks after we began and her results have already paid for all of my time to build their website and do the initial SEO.

In another class , I talk about Marketing, Positioning, and Branding .  I won’t go over that here except to say this. Before you begin Search Engine Optimization work, you should ensure you have the right marketing positioning and branding.

Positioning is an internal exercise to decide exactly what we’re going to talk about when we’re selling to a concretely identifiable market. This is an internal message.  It’s a guiding message.  Everything on your site should reflect the essence of it.

Branding is all about boiling that internal position down to something that communicates powerfully, and a set of actions to burn that message into the mind of our prospects.  

OK, back to SEO.  Regarding goals, for this crash-course, let’s say you are a Pittsburgh-based therapist, and your goal is to get three leads a week and to close four clients a month.

There is no limit to the types of products you can advertise using Adwords. You need to realize that there is traffic for all types of products on Google and getting those people to your website would almost certainly equal lots more sales. If you would like to market a lot of goods, you could go with affiliate sales, where there are literally hundreds of products you can sell. Here, your imagination is the limit. If you work as hard as possible, you’ll make as much money as possible. In order to see real conversions, you’ll have to make sure your landing page matches with your ad and is totally in sync with it. Having an irrelevant landing page is one of the main reasons people receive traffic but don’t see any sales/leads. Using AdWords, you can get traffic to almost any website, even if it’s about One minute cure scam – you can be sure that Google won’t dissapoint you.

I have some bad news, and some good news for you!

First, I am going to start with the bad news…get it out of the way.

The PPC game has changed.  If you have been using Google Adwords over the past years or even months, you may have been hit by what we like to call the Google SLAP.  It is very tough to get websites with a high Quality Score into Google…especially if you are a “newer” marketer without account history.

You see, what Google is trying to do is improve the relevancy of paid search results, and in the process wiping out many marketers within their system.

Where the heck is the good news Kyle?

Despite what I have said, there is some really GREAT news that comes from this.  If Google is dropping advertisers like flies from their system, it means that competition is also dropping like flies.

Many of the advertisers getting hit are what we refer to as “expensive competition”.  These are people that don’t know what they are doing and are willing to spend more money than they should on keywords.  These people lose money again and again as they don’t realize or understand the correct PPC practices (which we teach in great depth at Wealthy Affiliate).

Guess what less competition means?

Lower bid prices and less ad competition under ALL keywords. 

If you can follow Google’s Quality Score conventions to a “tee” (ads, ad groups, landing pages, website set-up, account, and more), then you can advertise under the Adwords network with the least competition I have ever seen.

Quote my words “I HAVE NEVER SEEN THIS LITTLE COMPETITION IN GOOGLE ADWORDS”.

If you can apply yourself and do whatever it takes to get your campaigns running in Google, you are going to be presented with massive opportunity.  Now is the time if any to get started. 

Google tends to mix things up almost on a weekly basis, changing their algorithms to increase their search relevance, dropping off even more advertisers.  Either you can keep up, or lose out.
