A fresh word has entered our lexicon, crowdsourcing. Crowdsourcing is outsourcing tasks, traditionally performed by a worker or contractor, with an undefined large crowd (the “crowd”), with an open call, usually as a “contest”. This is available to anyone, anywhere! A proposal is submitted online, often through “contests” where folks are invited to submit their solution. The host with the contest then features a free pool to decide on the solution from along with a reward goes to the chosen submission.
This Sounds Great!
Proponents say it is a wonderful thing! No trying to find resources, interviewing, checking references and hiring paperwork; celebrate everyone more productive, because effort is done off site, quickly and cheaply! They view 1000s of submissions and select the best of the bunch, as well as the price is a little fraction of hiring a known and reliable resource to accomplish a similar thing. Lose your pounds . be some question in regards to the legality of the business model, thus the call is in the type of a “contest” as being a solicitation for work without paying wages is against the law in the US. However, that’s precisely what is being carried out. There are several desperate souls who labor for a long time and submit their work on the slim chance they’ll be “the chosen one”. Strategy, huh?
However the Downside is…
So is there a downside? Well, basically wanted code written, an advertising and marketing campaign created or perhaps a logo produced for my company, I might need to know something about my business partner, you will find, your contractors are partners. Is that this person you happen to be dealing with relaxing in prison somewhere implementing a PC? Who exactly am I checking my offer to? With crowdsourcing you truly never know; do the submissions result from a trained pro, or perhaps a hobbiest.
I will be asking these phones create for my company, but they don’t know me in any respect. Just how do the product delivered truly reflect me or my company? What do I do should there be an issue? The “winner” may be from Timbuktu (or prison!) i can’t speak with them. And perhaps the most important question, how is it fair to undervalue professional services by soliciting them online via a “contest”?

In today’s financially strapped world, many are looking for alternative ways to earn. Either as a worthy substitute for what they currently do, or as a means to augment their income. Perhaps the easiest way to earn on the side is by setting up an online business of your own. Whether you sell a service or a product or products, online businesses don’t cost as much as starting a physical store.

When starting a physical store as a place of business, there are a lot of expenses to consider. First off, there’s the matter of getting a business license. Though it may not cost too much, the hassle is the problem. Then there’s the issue of rent, unless you are lucky to own a piece of real estate in a commercial area. There are the salaries of your staff, the utility bills, the cost of installing a security system, the renovation of the store, the furniture, and many more! Add that all up, and chances are you will be discouraged.

Let’s go to starting a business online then. for starter you’d spend around $5 more or less to purchase a domain name. Then you’d have to hire a website developer to build your site, unless you can build it yourself. Then you’d have to hire an SEO expert to handle the marketing end, and also you’d have to pay for “click to buy” services” if you want to start earning. Add all it up, and it’s still a fraction of what you’ll pay for a physical business. But to really save money, you can bypass the above and instead use a free blog, use the templates in the blog to build your site and learn SEO to handle the marketing yourself. That leaves us with an initial capital of, zero! Sounds good?

Then there’s the “click to buy” service. How can you bypass that service? Well, you can start by being a trustworthy individual and have people wire transfer the money to your account, or you can use paypal (which is a free service). Though the problem with these is that though you are trustworthy, your buyer may not, so stick with paypal. A paid service will work better of course, but there are numerous workarounds. So how much have you spent now with an online business? Basically nothing except your time.

Of course when starting an online business, many things are to be considered that are not mentioned above. But the overall gist of this article is to show that doing business online costs way less than doing business in a physical store. Also, and perhaps the best thing about working on the Internet, is that you have the freedom to work wherever you want to. You can work from home, or on the beach while sipping margaritas in a coconut with the little umbrellas. Though of course you’d have to be connected all the time so it’s worth it to invest in a sound data plan for your phone so you can check online orders and your emails regularly. Unless you enjoy doing daily commutes and the stresses of working in a cramped space, there’s no bypassing having to pay for a good phone and data plan.
